<image:caption>Here, we review current literature regarding how intercellular crosstalk and cell:ECM interactions regulate the process of cardiac regeneration. We focus on different cell types in the heart, including cardiomyocytes, fibroblasts, immune cells, endothelial and endocardial cells. Furthermore, we provide a short overview of recently established experimental techniques to understand intercellular crosstalk in vivo and end by providing some insight into interorgan communication in the context of cardiac regeneration. This review is part of the special issue “Recent Advances in Cardiovascular Biology”.</image:caption>

<image:title>Publications - CM protrusion and invasion in zebrafish heart regeneration - Border-zone cardiomyocytes and macrophages regulate extracellular matrix remodeling to promote cardiomyocyte protrusion during cardiac regeneration.</image:title>
<image:caption>We provide a comprehensive characterization of CM protrusion and invasion during zebrafish cardiac regeneration using histological and time-lapse imaging approaches. Further, using genetic and clodronate ablation models, we provide evidence that macrophage presence at the border zone of regenerating hearts is essential for ECM remodeling and subsequent CM invasion. We show that Mmp14b plays an important role in macrophage presence and ECM remodeling at the border zone and subsequent CM invasion. Lastly, we also show that CM-specific mmp14b OE is sufficient to promote CM invasion in vivo.</image:caption>

<image:title>Publications - AP-1: an essential regulator of zebrafish cardiomyocyte regeneration - AP-1 TFs are essential regulators of zebrafish cardiomyocyte regeneration</image:title>
<image:caption>We show here that AP-1 transcription factor genes are upregulated in border zone cardiomyocytes (CMs) following cryoinjury. Furthermore, using CM-specific dominant-negative approaches, we found that AP-1 contributes to chromatin accessibility changes in regenerating CMs and that AP-1 is essential for multiple aspects of CM regeneration, including dedifferentiation, proliferation, sarcomere disassembly, and invasion of the injured area. Notably, we found that the AP-1 response largely differs in regenerative zebrafish versus nonregenerative mouse CMs and that overexpression of Junb and Fosl1 in mammalian CMs can promote hallmarks of CM regeneration in vitro.</image:caption>
